If you are a big fan of the Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network and the Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law series, then this is a game that you will enjoy because that is basically what the game is all about. The game is primarily an interactive story that the player gets to participate in, each case being an episode of the cartoon series.
You will start out by having the case in some way present itself. It may be by seeing dark and shadowy figures stealing stuff from what appears to be the law offices of Sebben & Sebben, or it could be the RIAA police busting into Harvey’s office to arrest Peanut for an alleged copy infringement violation, or it could be a small yellow duck formerly known as Yacky Doodle AKA Chemical Castration AKA Nailgun asking for help, but it always leads to Harvey’s famous like, “I’ll take the case”. And off we go.
You will search the crime scenes for evidence and clues, interview suspects and witnesses and ultimately end up in what can only jokingly be referred to as a court of law. All of the humor in the network show is in the name so be aware, this is not a game for the young as some of the humor may be a little crude for some. That being said, you will now present your case.
Case presentation is interesting and is handled in the same manner on all platforms. You can press the witness on their testimony and Harvey will challenge those statements that are challengeable. Then you can present evidence that will support your case. Present the right evidence and your case will advance, but present the wrong evidence and you will loose a Birdman crest. Loose all of your crests, and the game is over…though you can start that section over again fresh.
You will get five cases to try and though they are not bad, and the price of the game is really at the lower range of the price spectrum, you’re really not getting a ton of fun for your money. It will take you anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes to clear each case so that is not a lot of game time for $39.99 for the Wii and $29.99 for the PS2 and PSP versions. There are some unlockable movies that add to the fun but in our opinion it still did not add enough cost to value ratio.
That being said, and be it known that I am not a huge fan of the Harvey Birdman cartoon, I did enjoy the game. It was funny and entertaining. I thought it was interesting the way it made you examine the evidence and made you think about the case and at the same time inserted some extremely juvenile humor to keep it all really light…after all, real court cases are pretty dry and boring, and the bailiff never really is caught with his fly down.
The voice acting is all pure Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law, what more can be said? It is very well done and just like controlling the toon. The graphics are also exactly as if you are controlling the actual cartoon, but there really is no difference between the visuals on any of the platforms. The Wii is no better than the PS2 though it does use the Wii Remote interface to point out the items on the screen instead of using the D-pad to cycle through the items.
Overall Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law was a fun game and should be a lot of fun for any fan of the Adult Swim cartoon. It is simple and still keeps you thinking, and yes, laughing. The voice acting was well done and makes it feel as if you are controlling the cartoon. Though it is my personal opinion that for the price there should have been a few more cases for the price, Birdman fans will gladly pay the price, especially in this lower price range for the five or so hours of fun that they will receive from the game. “Ah-ha! A sexy five hours!”
