Reports are that the Republican Vice-Presidential candidate's Yahoo email account was hacked. Images of the contents were posted on a site called 4chan. Could be a Democrat attempt to discredit Gov. Palin.

One of Sarah Palin's Yahoo email accounts was reportedly hacked and the contents of the account were posted for a short time on the website 4chan. the concern was that the Republican Vice-Presidential candidate was using the account in order to conduct business as the Governor of the state of Alaska.

Some reports are that the hack could have been an attempt by an individual or group of Democrats in order to discredit Gov. Palin. But the plot seems to have been foiled as there was nothing incriminating or even unethical found among the emails.

Proxy traces of the emails that were posted indicated that the posted emails were at the hand of student with ties to state-level Democratic politics. This closer review of the images also indicate that they were likely third or forth-time downloads that were then re-posted on 4chan, making the owner of that proxy the unlikely hacker of the account.

The report does raise questions about the safety of online email accounts. How could the account have been hacked?

Some speculation is that Gov. Palin could have been the victim of a phishing scheme. Other possibilities exist though as the name of the account was posted in the Washington Post by a reporter, Karl Vick in a September 10th article reporting on the use of a Yahoo email account by Gov. Palin to conduct state business. It would not have taken much to Google personal information on the Vice-Presidential candidate in order to guess her password.

Either way, the hacking does bring into question the safety of online email accounts and the ability of high-profile users accounts' being hacked for personal or political gain.
