The infected pages of the German edition of Wikipedia were quickly removed once the problem was discovered, and all versions of the page permanently deleted. But the ease of which Wikipedia was hacked to be the source of malware has caused shockwaves around the world.
It was the entry for the W32.Blaster worm in the German version of the popular online encyclopedia that was altered to include false information about a new version of the Lovesan/MS Blaster worm, with links to a supposed fix. The fix was actually a piece of malicious code, according to anti-virus vendor Sophos.
It is not yet clear how long the hacked pages were "live" before the corruption was discovered, but Wikipedia moved quickly once the discovery was made. But to make matters even worse, the German hackers then spammed the online German community, urging them to visit the Wikipedia site for information on getting rid of the W32.Blaster worm.
