Time Magazine Says YOU are the 2006 Man of the Year

Time Magazine has selected their coveted title of this year's Man of the Year. And just who is it? You. Time has selected all of us, the community of Internet users as THE 2006 Man of the Year. Is this a cop-out or what? Well, their justification is that we contribute greatly to the Internet through our contributions to YouTube, MySpace web pages, and our contributions to Wikipedia.

Well, beyond all of the hype, it's really a lot of us who make these contributions. We're not just young tech geeks, but some of us are older adults and even those less technologically-oriented Grandmas who make up this community of Internet users. I know that Jay Leno comments that "...if you download porn, then YOU are the Man of the Year". But it is really so much more than that.

The Internet has in itself become a social networking phenomenon illustrated by sites such as MySpace, Friendster, and HoverSpot are social networks lthe likes we've never seen before. MySpace alone has reported that over 100 million people use the social networking site, and this would represent about one-third of all Americans.

So really, just who IS the Man of the year? Well, cop-out or not, this giant social network and all who contribute to it should be recognized in some way for their contribution that we all make to society as a whole. We are more informed, and more connected that ever in the history of man. So today, I want you all to celebrate being recognized for the contribution that you make to hit society and sit up a little straighter at that keyboard. Or better yet, maybe you should just turn the computer off and take a friend out to dinner and celebrate together.
