Robot nurses could be a reality in a hospital near you, in as soon as three years. Being developed by European Union-funded scientists, the robot nurses will do more basic tasks such as mopping up spills, taking messages, and directing visitors to the hospital bed of a patient. They could even distribute medications and monitor a patient's temperature by using a remote laser thermometers.
The real idea here is that these robot nurses could ease the burden now being faced by nurses in hospitals all over the world. They would be designed to help keep the hospital wards cleaner and potentially even cut infections by hospital super-bugs like MRSA, (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus). The nurse robot would consist of a mobile platform with mounted sensors and equipment like a laser thermometer.
It is not possible with current technology to make a smart robot nurse, and it would take some ground-breaking technology, but it is being worked on now and the technology is quite possible very soon. Using sensors, cameras, and even voice communication, they could be deployable in the near future.
