There are many programs such as McAfee and NET Nanny Software that help reduce the risk of our kids being exposed to porn, but it's still happening. A study being published later this month in the February issue of Pediatrics says that just under half of U.S. children ages 10 to 17 said that they saw pornography online in the year before they were surveyed.
Online pornography is defined as images of naked people or people having sex. The study conducted between March and June of 2005 surveyed kids, many of which reported unwanted exposure. More than one-third of 16 and 17-year-old boys surveyed said they had intentionally visited X-rated sites in the past year. Among girls the same age, 8 percent had done so.
Other kids said that they would mistakenly stumble across pornographic sites while they are surfing the Internet for legitimate non-porn sites. Often times, youth would be searching for legitimate gaming sites but find that these game enthusiast sites were covered with sexually explicit adds and pop-ups.
