China Arrests Six for Panda Virus

Chinese authorities detained six men who are all in their 20s, for writing or profiting from the computer virus called "joss-stick burning panda". This virus has infected over a million PCs in China, and has wreaked havoc among both, corporate and individual users in the country. Its major outbreak was in 2006, causing file deletion, program damage, and even damage to web portals.

The virus got its name from the changing icons on the desktops into "cute" cartoon pandas. The most famous icon holds 3 burning joss-sticks in it's paws. The Chinese media said that the worm was able to steal account names of online gamers and instant messengers, that were hotly traded with real money in China's cyberspace.

Authorities are holding Li Jun, 25 a native of Wuhan city in central China. He is accused of writing the virus in October and earned about $13,000 from selling it to more than 120 people. The other five are from three different provinces, were detained for updating and spreading the virus or for profiting from the stolen account names.
