Sony customer support says that the technical problems have been worked out on the 2.40 firmware update and it is set to re-release on Wednesday.

Sony customer support has announced that it has worked out the bugs from the firmware 2.40 download and is ready to upload it once again to the PlayStation 3 update servers come this Wednesday or so. It is further reported to have a fix for users that installed the original bugged 2.40 firmware update whether you had problems or not.

According to the Sony customer support CVG notes, the re-release will be set for midweek, but there is no official statement as yet just what was the cause of the freezing or bricking issues seen by some PlayStation 3 owners. Some owners went so far as to completely reformat their hard drives to get their units working again and lost all of their saved games.

But Sony has thus far remained silent as to the full cause of the problem with the firmware update and the problems seen last week. No news was even seen leaked out on blogs over the weekend as is often the case with issues of this nature.

With the new midweek release date should come fixes for previous problems as well as new trophy support for PlayStation 3 games. Also scheduled with this update is the XMB interface upgrade.

Most Xbox 360 users are quipping in blogs that these services have been available for the 360 since its launch without the problems of turning the console into a brick. While PS3 owners snap back that now if only Microsoft could only get over the "Red Rings of Death" on the Xbox 360.
