Sony Computer Entertainment America announced the release of a new wireless keypad that will attach to both, the Sixaxis and the DualShock 3 controllers for the PlayStation 3, set to hit store shelves in North America in November, and internationally by the end of the year 2008.

The keypad sports a number of features allowing users an easy way to text chat with friends. Features include two shortcut buttons, a communications button, and a message box button that are placed on the lower part of the keypad making it easy for users to use pre-set features on the XrossMediaBar like Friends and Message Box at the same time the user is in-game.

On of the more interesting features is that the keypad has a mode that converts the surface of the keypad into a touch pad for use in navigating a Web page. The device can also work with other Bluetooth-enabled devices that have keyboard functionality such as smart phones. The keypad can also be charged by attaching it to the PS3 system with a USB cable.

Sony also announced that the Wireless Keyboard will be packaged with a new $499.99 PlayStation 3 system that includes a 160GB hard drive, and a DualShock 3 wireless controller. The system will also come with a copy of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune by Naughty Dog. This will also be available in November in North America.

While some say that Sony is again playing catchup to the Microsoft Xbox 360 as it has had the capability of using a full-sized USB keyboard, Sony contends that the Sony Wireless Keyboard if much more innovative in that it is wireless and will operate with other devices.
