PlayStation Network Launches PlayStation Game Download Service

Sony Computer Entertainment America has launched the first classic PlayStation games on their PlayStation Network. The games are downloaded from the PlayStation Network by way of the PlayStation 3, and are transfered via memory stick and played on the Sony PlayStation Portable, (PSP). The first games available are Cool Boarders, Crash Bandicoot, Hot Shots Golf 2, Syphon Filter and Tekken 2 and each cost $5.99. More titles are scheduled for release later this month.

Basically, the PlayStation emulated games on the PSP are just the start of what Sony sees as a way to leverage a wide selection of PlayStation brand games in an effort to deliver more value to Sony gamers. Peter Dille, senior vice-president product marketing of SCEA. said "We built every system with a hard disk drive and offer every customer free access to the PlayStation Store so they can experience the full extent of the PlayStation library. We'll offer additional PlayStation games to the PlayStation Store on a regular basis."

While this download service is welcome by many that wish to play the older PlayStation games, others are upset that the games will not be able to be played on the PlayStation 3 itself. Although the PS3 is backward-compatible with older PlayStation discs, the downloaded games have been coded to run only on the PSP.

This service is currently only available in the United States and Japan. The service is scheduled for international release in March of 2007.
