Sony Announced Slimmer PSP at E3 conference

Sony Corp. announced during the E3 media briefing, that it will launch a new slimmer PlayStation Portable (PSP) in September of this year. This appears to be Sony's latest attempt to compete more effectively with the Nintendo Dual Screen (DS) Lite. Though both companies released their hand-held systems in 2004, the DS has consistently out-sold the PSP. E3 Media & Business Summit is being held in Santa Monica, California from July 11th through the 13th.

According to Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai, "From a distance, this PSP might not look very different from the current model...but when you have it in your hand, the difference becomes quite clear as it's actually 33 percent lighter than the current PSP. It's also 19 percent slimmer."

Hirai replaced Ken Kutaragi as the head of Sony's game division earlier this year. Kutaragi is known as the "Father of the PlayStation", but is not gone from Sony but is still serving in a consultive position.

Though Sony sold 8.4 million PSPs in the year ending March of 2007, Nintendo outpaced Sony by selling more than 23.6 million units. Sony said that the new slimmer PSP will retail for about $170, about $40 more than the newest DS model.
