Wii took the top spot while the Sony PlayStation 3 earned the number 2 spot in sales. This is a big disappointment for Microsoft since the Xbox 360 is in last place at number 3.
Grand Theft Auto IV wasn't enough to help the Xbox 360 in sales. It's probably more surprising that Sony has managed to beat Microsoft with it's PS3 in May.
However, the number one selling game for May was GTA IV which sold 1.31 million units bringing its total sales since its launch up to 4.2 million games sold. The problem is that the game sales are not converting over to sales of consoles as much as Microsoft or Sony had hoped.
{slot15}With Wii Fit still selling fast, the Wii's momentum is strong for now. Whether the system stays on top through 2008 could depend on the offerings for the holiday season.
The world will get a sneak peek of what's in store from Nintendo at next month's E3 conference, where the video-game industry traditionally shows off what's in store for gamers during the next year.
According to an analyst at the NPD Group, the continued success of Grand Theft Auto IV is not translating into big hardware sales for either the Microsoft Xbox 360 or the Sony PlayStation 3.
