According to the market research firm The NPD Group, Nintendo topped the sales charts even though GTA IV was the top-selling game.

Nintendo topped the sales charts for May according to market research firm The NPD Group, even though the best selling game was Grand Theft Auto IV. Still, seven of the top selling titles were for the Nintendo Wii, or for the Nintendo DS.

The number one selling game for May was GTA IV which sold 1.31 million units bringing its total sales since its launch up to 4.2 million games sold. The problem is that the game sales are not converting over to sales of consoles as much as Microsoft or Sony had hoped.

According to an analyst at the NPD Group, the continued success of Grand Theft Auto IV is not translating into big hardware sales for either the Microsoft Xbox 360 nor the Sony PlayStation 3. There is hope however for the month of June with graduations and Father's Day coming up.

Total sales figures for the Nintendo Wii are now at 10.2 million units, on a par with the Microsoft Xbox 360 which has sold 10.27 million units to date. This makes it a very close horse race indeed.
