Writers Guild of America Ends Three-month Strike

Writers Guild of America members will now vote on a new proposal from studios and producers that were approved on Monday. The three-year contract offers writers a percentage of digital media revenue, including compensation for TV shows and movies streamed over the Internet.

The writers decided overwhelmingly in favor of ending the 3-month strike with 3,492 voting yes and 283 voting no.

Under the new contract, writers would get a maximum flat fee of about $1,200 for Internet streamed programs in the deal's first two years, and 2 percent of distributor gross earnings in year three.

The proposal isn't exactly what the Writers Guild of America wanted, but writers are going back to work following the three-month-long strike.

The guild said its members voted Tuesday to end their three-month strike that brought the entertainment industry to a standstill.

The writers did not get jurisdiction over reality shows.

The strike also turned the usually star-studded Golden Globes show into a news conference and threatened the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony since members of the Screen Actors Guild stood in solidarity with the WGA vowed not to cross picket lines.

According to Jack Kyser, a chief economist for the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp., the strike took a $3.2 billion toll in direct and indirect costs on the economy of Los Angeles County, the home of most of the nation's television and film production.

The last writers strike, a 153-day walkout in 1988, caused an estimated $500 million in lost wages.
