Apple Inc. said that the problem with the iPod nanos that are overheating is a faulty battery problem.

Apple Inc. has released a statement that claims that the cases of iPod nanos overheating and as some reports from Japan claim, even coming close to catching fire, are due to faulty batteries. For this reason, Apple is replacing any iPod nanos affected by the problem, as long as they are among the first-generation nanos sold between September 2005 and December 2006.
{slot15}Japanese officials are investigating reports of incidents where iPod nanos overheated getting hot enough to scorch paper. Apple only acknowledged that those first-generation nanos can, in very rare cases, overheat. But that the company has received reports that less than 0.001 percent of the first-generation nanos sold are exhibiting this problem, and that this problem has been traced back to a single battery supplier. The supplier was not named.
Apple explained that there have been know reports of any serious injuries or property damage due to the nano overheating issue. Apple further added that the issue does not affect any other iPod nano model other than the first-generation models.
Anyone that has experienced any overheating battery issues or who might have concerns is encouraged to contact AppleCare at http://apple.com/support. Any Apple iPod nano found to be effected by the faulty batteries will be replaced by Apple at no cost to the customer.
