AMD is scheduled to officially release Triple Core CPUs in February 2008. We can only hope they'll be significantly cheaper than the quad-core chips
{slot15}Half-Life Source engine is supposed to run smooth on AMD's quad-core Phenoms but until now there have been disappointments. The architecture might be more elegant than Intel's, but the chips are comparatively slow and over-priced next to Intel's Core 2 Quad CPUs. However, AMD may still be able to compete with its forthcoming triple-core CPUs, which are rumoured to be scheduled for release in February next year.
According to DigiTimes, AMD has already notified motherboard manufacturers of its plans to release two triple-core CPUs ( codenamed Toliman), called the 7700 and 7600, in February 2008. The former will apparently be clocked at 2.5GHz, while the latter will be clocked at 2.3GHz. Both chips are alleged to have a TDP of 89W.
Given that many multithreaded applications don't use more than three cores, these processors could dig AMD's delayed Barcelona architecture out of the pit of despair, but only if they're priced competitively compared with Intel's processors.
