Douglas Edric Stanley is a digital artist that didn't see the harm in using the New York City Twin Towers in his tribute to the 30th anniversary of the video game, Space Invaders but many others thought it was in bad taste. The exhibit is being shown at the Leipzig Games Convention in eastern Germany.
The "art" depicts the Twin Towers being destroyed by an alien attack and it is the gamer's responsibility to stop the attack by shooting down the aliens before the Towers are totally destroyed. Many relatives of those who died in the September 11th attack in New York were shocked by the use of the Towers in such a manner.
{slot15}Now the owner of Space Invaders, Taito has chimed in with their concern. That is that the artist, Stanley, never obtained permission to use their commercial property in this or any other way.
Taito Corp., owned by Square Enix Co. Ltd., released a statement on Friday saying that the Invaders display at the Leipzig Games Convention was produced without the knowledge of the company and that the use of Space Invaders content was completely unauthorized.
Taito further advised that it is seriously considering all available options including legal actions against Stanley. Stanley has been ordered to remove the protected content from the convention.
