As reported on GameSHOUT in December, Linksys, a division of Cisco was announced their new phone, the iPhone. It seems that Linksys owned the trademarked the name "iPhone" since 2000 when they purchased InfoGear Technology Corp who in turn trademarket the name in 1996. Linksys is now manufacturing a phone under that name. This leads to a few issues between Cisco and Apple, as Apple Inc. Announced their iPhone last month.
{slot15}Now Apple has only another week to respond to the Cisco trademark infringement lawsuit. This suit threatens to keep Apple Inc. from using the name "iPhone" for their new cell phone-music player. The companies had previously agreed to extend the deadline to Thursday night, February 15th, but now Cisco has allowed an extension until next Wednesday, February 21st, for Apple to respond to the suit filed in Federal Court in San Fransisco. Both companies stated that they both want the extra time in an attempt to reach a settlement.
Linksys has started shipping their line of iPhones last spring, and word is that they are willing to allow Apple to use the trademarked name, as long as both companies iPhones can communicate with each other.
Originally Apple called the lawsuit silly. They contend that they may use the trademarked name because both phones using the name are operating over different networks and in different ways. The Linksys product is a VoIP (voice over IP) phone while the Apple product is a cellular phone.
