Users can now go to iTunes and download iPhone ringtones for $2 each though there is also a way to make your own custom ringtones as well

It's not a bad deal to be able to go to iTunes and download ringtones for your iPhone without the hassle for about $2, $1 for the song and another $1 to convert it to a ringtone. But of course the moment that cost becomes involved, hackers set out to find out a way around the cost. The last few days, Apple has been involved in an attempt to block iPhone users from installing free ringtones on their handsets, only to find the hackers come up with workarounds just hours after the patches release.
There are ringtone applications available such as iToner for Mac which is only $15 from Ambrosia Software and iPhoneRingtoneMaker, also $15 but from Efiko Software for Windows. These are both full featured ringtone manager programs designed for iPhone handsets that feature drag-and-drop ringtone management and include the ability to use just about any type of sound file and option to set specific songs to play when certain people call. Of course, the latest iTunes patch seems to have crippled iPhoneRingtoneMaker for some users though you can be assured that Efiko will be working on a solution.
There is another alternative to getting custom ringtones on your iPhone. It requires the use of the the Jailbreak application and a bit of command-line work. Using Jailbreak to unlock your iPhone and installing the SSH application will let you interact with the iPhone's file system just as you would any other external device. You'll be able to install ringtones and much, much more. The debate goes on about the legality of this method so one should proceed with caution. Some say using a song you purchased as a ringtone does not constitute fair use and may be grounds for copyright infringement.
